The DIVA News page refers to public presentations, exhibitions, screenings, publications in Slovenia and on the international scene, connected to participations of DIVA Station Video Archive and the video artists who had contributed their video artworks to the archive. We also introduce events organised by DIVA Station (SCCA-Ljubljana) in order to promote its content and usage.
In cooperation with Slovenian Cinematheque, SCCA-Ljubljana is hosting Alexandra Halkin, a director, producer, film curator and writer from Chicago, USA. In her lecture on 11 January 2024, she will present her work and the beginnings of cooperation with Zapatista communities, as well as the creation of the bi-national cooperation Chiapas Media Project/ProMedios (Mexico/USA), which she founded in 1998 in cooperation with the local community. The organization established indigenous community media centers where the communities produced their own videos that documented community life and the impact of militarization, human rights abuses, cultural and religious events, cooperatives and women’s work, some productions were in their own languages. The lecture will be followed by a screening of a video programme from the Chiapas Media Project/ProMedios archive together with two animated films, which she created in collaboration with a group of Cuban animators and musicians during the pandemic. Four festival days of the 3rd International Festival of Experimental Audiovisual Practices V-F-X Ljubljana (11 – 14 May 2023) challenge the horizon of the domesticated gaze: with the filmmaker in focus, the experimental animator Gudrun Krebitz, we will explore the polyphonic layering of intimate cinematic landscapes; we will get to know the blazing Pan-American experimental production through two programmes selected by the guest curator Jean-Jacques Martinod, while this year’s new section Vistas brings together what the programme team has gleaned from the wide field of current practices. With the New Light programme we would like to emphasise the significance of preserving Slovenian heritage, but we at the same time also unreservedly think about the future: during the festival, the interactive VR installation Journey Into the Universe of Consciousness will test the limits of the gaze. In addition to Neža Knez’s workshop and exhibition, the Czech artist Jan Kulka will provide a fitting closing of the festival with his AV performance. Vive le expérimental! More
