Within the context of DIVA Station, an archive of video and new media art, we are continuously preparing exhibitions with specific themes involving in-depth research. In 2015/16 season we are focused on the relationship between film and video.

The two invited artists/filmmakers, Jasna Hribernik and Nataša Prosenc Stearns, both have extensive experiences in creating film and video art. Their works challenge the boundaries of the conventional and often outdated rules of traditional film and art practices. More

Kulturnik.si, developed by Ljudmila, will be presented by its programmers Luka Frelih, Žiga Kranjec, Zoran Obradović and Mitja Doma, and its meta-editors Polona Torkar and Alenka Pirman. Invited guests are Barbara Borčić (DIVA Station/SCCA-Ljubljana), Lenart J. Kučić (Marsowci) and Robert Ožura (Kamra).

The objective of the international symposium Museums of Film – Film in the Museum lied not only in consideration of the possibilities of and preconditions for encouraging initiatives for the founding of a film museum in Croatia; at the same time this interdisciplinary meeting of experts should set off discussions about issues that arise in this domain: the definition of terminology, challenges in the encounter of the analogue world and the new digital paradigm, taking up issues of professional and scholarly historical and artistic research, facing up to the accelerating changes of technologies and the problems of preserving the audio-visual heritage, and expectations and experiences of visitors to and/or users of the film museum.

The presentation by Barbara Borčić took place on the 5th of November and within the section entitled The Encounter of the Analogue World and the New Digital Paradigm. Preservation of the Film/Video Heritage. The section will be moderated by Branko Franceschi and Tanja Vrvilo and will present speakers Carmen Lhotka (Croatian State Archives/Croatian Film Archive, Zagreb), Sandro Đukić (painter, artist, Zagreb), Darko Fritz (multimedia artist, curator, Zagreb) and Dan Oki (Art Academy Split (UMAS).

Metka Dariš from Slovenia participated at the symposium with lecture entitled Slovene Cinemateque – Film Museum.

On this day (and throughout the year) we should focus on the meaning of audio-visual materials and their carriers (film, video and sound footages, radio and television), and provide an incentive to protect and maintain these documents which are an essential part of cultural heritage.

Archives at risk: protecting the world's identities is the slogan of this year's celebration of the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. We are accepting a consensus that we are not able to comprehend the development of culture and society in the 20th and 21st Century without audiovisual archives and the material that they preserve. The slogan of this year’s celebration could not be more accurate – a vast majority of organisations dealing with AV archives of contemporary art (amongst them DIVA Station) face themselves with lack of support by the authorities which could assure a sustainable and professional work in this field. The archives are endangered not just because of the fragile and vulnerable archiving material which is subject to fast chemical decay and technological out-datedness but mostly due to a lack of recognition of their importance by the (national) authorities.

DIVA Station honoured the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage with the practice of an “open archive” to trigger a constructive exchange and emancipated work by the artists. We have invited Ana Čigon, video and performance artist, to browse across archived material and through a comparative research position her own artistic practice and create a site specific intervention in the physical venue of the DIVA Station archive.

We believe that important parts of the archiving processes are also “creative re-use” and individual approaches by the users, which can lead to a better accessibility and higher visibility of archival material and help to raise awareness of the importance of our audiovisual heritage.

DIVA Station is a physical and web/on-line archive of video art which is being developed since 2005 at SCCA– Ljubljana, Center for Contemporary Arts with the intent to research, document, present and archive video/media art in Slovenia. DIVA Station is a member of the GAMA portal which provides access to a wealth of information about the works of both well-known and emerging European and non-European media artists.

Ana Čigon’s research concluded with a performance at the Project Room SCCA on the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage which UNESCO has proclaimed on 27 October. DIVA Station thus joined the celebration with the practice of an “open archive” to trigger a constructive exchange and emancipated work by the artists as well as their capacity to comment and interpret the av archive and the archiving practices of today. 
The visitors were invited to observe and comment with questions the selection of video works the artist exhibited at the Project Room. The artist thus created multiple variations of entering the av archive. Picturesque stories from the archive occurred and showcased the variability of the av content in the archive.

Ana Čigon (1982) lives and works in Ljubljana and Štanjel, Slovenia. Graduated in 2012 from Master programme (MA) of Interface Cultures at The University for Art and Industrial Design (Kunstuniversität), Linz – Austria; in 2011 graduated from Master programme (MFA) of VIDEO at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Ljubljana; in 2007 graduated from Painting (BFA) at the same academy; in 2005 Socrates/Erasmus exchange programme at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin - Ireland NCAD.
