SYNOPSIS

Two sperical bowls (from the Dancers series) have simple motorics and a bit more complex sensorics. They are susceptible to the sound they hear, but they also coproduce the sound (compressed microphony). This is why the bowls are full of sound. They can see each other (infrared sensor) and then they change direction. This should allow for the bowls to slowly zigzag closer to each other, which doesn’t really interests us anymore, but for the bowls this may be defined as a motive (with humans it could be called love).

A simple autoreferential algorithmics produces / gives birth to a kind of autonomy of the machine. The spherical form is very interesting, since it allows a non-intelligent being to simply bounce over and frees itslef from a complicated situation. The intelligence of the form. Also, the bowles like to wrap around obstacles - human legs - a very cat-like behaviour. It is interesting to observe human reactions and how quickly the thing is personified into a being.

The two bodies were first used in 2005 at the Problemloss performance at Moderna galerija in Ljubljana. Later they found their place in presentation/ installation entitled Distributed body in Mala galerija of the Moderna galerija - and at some other events.

Footage with no sound is from the presentation of Slovene scene at Ars Electronica 2008, organized by Kapelica gallery. Recently the bowls had role in the project by Marko Košnik "Apres Midi" (after midi; produced by Institut Egon March) in 2014 at Kapelica gallery Ljubljana. For that occasion they got a microcotroller heart and remote control - not much autonomy anymore. Within the project Robotanica / Genesis by Cirkulacija 2 in 2017 they additionally got a camera to wirelessly send images  ("the view from below"). (Borut Savski)
